I'll be honest, I liked the concept behind Fiverr.com.
Only a couple of clicks and a client can place an order with a freelancer based on a particular set of deliverables.
Sure, however, it comes at a price. A significant one.
This is just one the very few freelance platforms at which buyers are given free reign to abuse, sabotage and outright blackmail vendors any way that they like.
Why? Because Fiverr turn a blind eye on it.
In this post, I want to discuss a recent bad experience as a vendor on Fiverr, and why I chose to give up on the stage altogether.
How A Normal Order Quickly Turned Into A Hostage Situation
While I've been utilizing Fiverr myself (off and on ) for a little while, this specific experience relates to my girlfriend's account, not my own.
(I have been advising her building a reputable accounts, and how to go beyond and above with every previous purchase. Everything stated is her doing, I'm just an audience )
In this case, she'd only gotten another $5 order on her emblem gig, which seemed to be like any other... so we thought.
The purchase was fulfilled in great time, and my buddy had included a bonus emblem concept as well as the source file (that is usually a part of the pricier package).
The customer"loved" one of the concepts so we moved to deliver her the appropriates record sizes, as mentioned in the gig description. Soon after, things got a little bizarre.
The customer came back asking for a social media kit to go with the emblem, something which is clearly not available as a member of her post.
Against my advice, my girlfriend chose to provide the extra job, although not getting paid any extra for it.
Following that, the customer responded with even more requirements and some modifications to the social media files.
At this time, she agreed enough was enough.
Despite every attempt to please this person, they were clearly overstepping their boundaries here.
That is when the customer went from simply overstepping boundaries to unquestionable blackmail. (The equivalent of taking my girlfriend's Fiverr standing hostage.)
While she took a while to contemplate a response and reach out to Fiverr service for help, the customer did eventually go ahead and leave a 1 star review.
Presumably this is to show her he/she was Fiverr - Freelance Services Marketplace for The Lean Entrepreneur not kidding.
Shortly after, while still waiting on Fiverr's response to the support query, the client paid an extra $10 to your social media kit.
Of course, the payment has been accompanied by still another danger.
Now, all I wished to do was go all Liam Neeson and search this person down so I could punch them from the face.
However, at the time, I had hope that Fiverr service would step in and rescue my girlfriend out of that PITA client.
When the response came from Fiverr service, they told that they couldn't Fiverr Review - The Pros and Cons of the Five-Dollar Marketplace ... force the purchaser to take the purchase.
Alright, that is fair enough. (Even though the purchaser accepted it.)
They also proposed drawing up a list for the purchaser to demonstrate the job was completed in accordance with the gig prerequisites.
Honestly, this reply just didn't cut the mustard.
My girlfriend communicated in her first email the customer was hoping to extort her for free work outside the agreed conditions, by leaving a negative inspection if she didn't comply.
Needless to say, it wasn't about the work, it was about seeking protection against an abusive client who had been intentionally pushing his luck.
Their answer did not give us any assurance that Fiverr actually understood , and even at this stage we felt like they didn't want to get involved.
At precisely the exact same time, she also responded to the buyers most recent danger, explaining that she would not continue to operate with them unless the comments was changed/removed.
(Again, this is feedback that has been obviously and blatantly left to bully her into supplying work out of the agreed provisions .)
An honest petition by anyones standards, right? Well, apparently not.
As opposed to acknowledge what the buyer had completed until this time, Fiverr instantly turned the tables on my girlfriend.
Turns out, she was the one breaking all the rules.
Because she'd requested the customer to change their feedback, she was no longer entitled to some assistance from Fiverr support.
You can imagine how we felt reading this.
Everything that the purchaser had said and done prior to her final message has been now being swept under the rug -- as if never happened at all.
Fiverr basically opted to encourage a manipulative bully, leaving my girlfriend with a permanent stain in an account she had worked so tough to accumulate.
And think, there are plenty of buyers doing exactly this on Fiverr, knowing they can and will eliminate it.
But as most of this was happening, I did a little investigating to find out if any other sellers went through a similar ordeal with an individual purchaser.
Very quickly, I discovered a range of almost identical cases on the Fiverr forum obsolete years back. (that's right, decades.)
This is clearly something which's been going on for a long time and it all stems from giving buyers too much power over sellers.
If there's one thing I have heard about Fiverr, it's that clients are ALWAYS more appreciated than freelancers.
Doesn't matter how long that you put into a project, or just how hard you worked on it, or maybe how long you handled communication during a dispute, if it actually comes down to it... freelancers have little to no security.
Even if it is a clear cut situation in your favour, there's still every chance the customer will come out at the top. It takes it one little thing that you"did no way" according to their conditions of support and EVERYTHING else is disregarded
Taking a look at the signs, it's clear to me that Fiverr is well aware of what is going on, yet remains ready to sit back and let it happen.
If you're a look at these guys decision maker in Fiverr and you're reading this, I implore you to seriously reevaluate your existing support procedures for freelancers.
It's not right that someone can place all the time and effort in to building up an account and over-delivering at every possible opportunity, just to be shot down from the very people you rely on to protect you.
Look, I do not wish to abandon Fiverr. I really don't wish to be telling people to prevent your system.
But after everything that has occurred, you haven't left me any choice.
Until something is done in order to protect freelancers from using this type of abuse, I will continue to propagate this post and do whatever I can to prevent others from falling prey to your one-sided support staff.
The next you truly do something about this and also give freelancers a means to fight back, I will be happy to update the post.
